Dons in the Polynesian Islands
Location: Classroom
Ages: Rising first through fifth graders. Campers will take a journey to the Polynesian Islands. We won’t be able to visit all of them. However, we will take a look at five of them which will include: Hawaiʻi, Tahiti, Tonga, Samoa/ American Samoa, and New Zealand. Each day of camp we will focus on one of the islands and dive deep into their cultural practices. Campers will learn about each Island’s history, language, cultural attire, food, native plants and animals. We will have several activities for campers such as Candy Lei Making, Ribbon Lei Making, Samoan Siapo Activity, and Polynesian Tribal Tattoo Activity. Campers will take home the activity keepsakes at the end of the camp week. There will be Pasifika Story Time as well where we will read children’s stories either based on Polynesian concepts or/and written by Pasifika Authors. In the middle of the week, campers will watch the Disney Movie, Moana, and learn about the Polynesian cultural practices in the movie. Lastly, the campers will learn a Hula Dance and perform it on the last day of camp at the all-Dons Camp Pool Time. Parents are welcome to attend the performance. We warmly welcome campers from all ethnic and gender backgrounds to attend the camp. Our camp is inclusive, which ensures a respectful and supportive environment for all participants. Overall, campers will be immersed in the Polynesian culture throughout the five days and return home to their parents/guardians expressing that they want to take a family trip to one of the many beautiful Polynesian Islands.
